Nightlife in Munich.

Pacha and Rote Sonne share an address on Maximiliansplatz, near Stachus, and Milchbar stands on Sonnenstraße in the heart of the city. Gärtnerplatz and the Glockenbachviertel hold countless bars and the centre of the city’s LGBTQ scene. Bahnwärter Thiel runs its club nights in the Schlachthofviertel, P1 sits in the basement of the Haus der Kunst, and the old factory site by Ostbahnhof, once one of Europe’s biggest party miles, is now the Werksviertel. The year turns on Fasching in winter and Oktoberfest on the Theresienwiese from mid September. Rooms can pour until five in the morning. Then Bavarian law asks for a closed hour, and it keeps a calendar of silent days.

Munich bar rules: closing time, licences and noise.

Bavaria gives Munich’s rooms one closed hour every morning and a set of silent days on which entertainment must keep a solemn tone. Hospitality licences come from the City of Munich’s Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR).

The night, by the clock6 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • Bars and clubs1
    • 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. Open to 5 a.m.
    • 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. Sperrzeit
  • Last four nights of Fasching2
    • 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. No Sperrzeit
  • Terraces on public ground12
    • 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Open to 23:00
    • 11 p.m. to Midnight Fri, Sat, holiday eves, Apr to Sep

The Sperrzeit is lifted in the night to 1 January and in the last four nights of Fasching. For one venue the City can bring the start forward to 19:00, push the end back to 08:00, or lift it for a limited time and revocably; the KVR decides case by case. On silent days, entertainment must keep a solemn tone from 02:00 (from midnight on Good Friday and Holy Saturday, from 14:00 on Christmas Eve).

Hours and silent days

  • Closing hour

    5 to 6 a.m.

For a single venue the City can bring the start forward to 19:00 at the earliest, push the end back to 08:00, or lift the Sperrzeit for a limited time and revocably.

    Read the rule

The Sperrzeit for bars, restaurants and public entertainment venues starts at 05:00 and ends at 06:00. It does not apply in the night to 1 January.

Ask the KVR how it decides and what it charges.1

  • Fasching nights

    Last 4 nights

The night from Shrove Tuesday into Ash Wednesday is not one of them, and Ash Wednesday is a silent day from 02:00.

    Read the rule

In the nights of the last four carnival days, Friday into Saturday, Saturday into Sunday, Sunday into Rosenmontag and Rosenmontag into Shrove Tuesday, the Sperrzeit is lifted generally.2

  • Silent days

    9 days

Protection runs from 02:00 to midnight, from midnight on Good Friday and Holy Saturday, and from 14:00 on Christmas Eve.

    Read the rule

Bavaria’s silent days are Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, All Saints’ Day, Volkstrauertag, Totensonntag, Buß- und Bettag and Christmas Eve. Public entertainment is allowed on them only if it keeps the day’s solemn character.

Volkstrauertag is a Sunday, so a Saturday night that runs past 02:00 into it, or into Totensonntag, falls under the rule.3

  • Good Friday

    No music

Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are silent days in a row, protected without a break from 02:00 on Thursday to midnight at the end of Saturday.

    Read the rule

On Good Friday, music of any kind is banned in rooms where drinks are served, on top of the silent-day rule.3

  • No entertainment tax

    None

Munich adds no entertainment tax at the door and no drinks tax at the bar.

    Read the rule

Bavarian municipalities may not levy an entertainment tax or a drinks tax.4

Staff and the door

  • IHK instruction

    Licence holder

Long experience in hospitality without that qualification does not exempt you.

    Read the rule

No professional qualification is needed for the licence, but the operator must attend the IHK course on food law and file proof, unless they hold a completed vocational qualification whose final exam covered food law.

The duty falls on the licence holder.5

  • Door staff

    § 34a

Check each door person’s certificate before the first shift.

    Read the rule

Guarding the entrance area of a hospitality disco needs a Sachkundeprüfung (expert knowledge exam) before the IHK, under § 34a of the trade code (GewO). The employer may use only reliable people with an IHK certificate of instruction.

Ask the KVR whether a venue’s own employed door staff are covered.7

  • Age limits

    16 and 18

14 and 15-year-olds may have beer, wine and sparkling wine only with a parent or guardian.

    Read the rule

Beer, wine and sparkling wine may not be given to under-16s, and other alcohol, spirits included, not to under-18s.8

  • Young guests at night

    Night clubs 18+

Plan door checks around these hours for any all-ages night.

    Read the rule

Children and young people may not be admitted to a venue run as a night bar or night club. Under-16s may stay in other venues only with a parent or guardian, or from 05:00 to 23:00 for a meal or a drink, and over-16s not unaccompanied from midnight to 05:00.9

The room and the neighbours

  • Music at night

    22:00 to 07:00

Breaches are administrative offences under Bavarian law.

    Read the rule

Munich’s music noise ordinance asks that instruments and sound equipment never considerably disturb others, and that from 22:00 to 07:00 they do not disturb the night’s rest. No amplifiers on private ground may face a pedestrian zone.

Ask the KVR how the ordinance applies to a licensed room.10

  • When neighbours complain

    KVR

If complaints pile up, the KVR orders a noise measurement by the city’s climate and environment department.

    Read the rule

The operator answers for the noise a venue makes. Complaints go to the KVR, and the local Bezirksinspektion first talks to the operator and warns them.

Ask the KVR what level it applies to your room.11

  • Terraces

    To 23:00

Parking-space terraces are allowed from April to October, mainly on 30 km/h streets.

    Read the rule

Outdoor seating on public ground (a Freischankfläche) may normally open from 06:00 to 23:00, and from April to September until midnight on Fridays, Saturdays and the day before a public holiday. No sound system, no patio heaters, and screens only by exception for major football matches.

The City can order an earlier close where residents are unreasonably disturbed.12

  • What a terrace costs

    €180

Ask the Bezirksinspektion which street group applies before you plan the size.

    Read the rule

Apply to your Bezirksinspektion with the form, a 1:100 plan and photos; the district committee’s consent is among the requirements. The first decision costs €180, and a yearly use fee of €16 to €77 per m² follows, by street group.13

  • MoNa, the city’s night desk

    City contact

Bring it in early when a neighbour dispute starts.

    Read the rule

MoNa (Moderation der Nacht) is the City of Munich’s central contact point for nightlife. It moderates the nightlife round table, mediates conflicts at night and names operators of bars, clubs and discos among its target groups.14

How to get a liquor licence in Munich, Bavaria

A bar or club in Munich that serves alcohol needs a Gaststättenerlaubnis from the City’s Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR). Bavaria still applies the federal Gaststättengesetz.

  1. Pick the route

Continuing an existing venue unchanged: a preliminary licence comes first, and the final licence follows after three months if nothing stands in the way. A new venue, or a change of size, layout or use, takes the building route instead.5

  2. Building approval first

For a new venue or a change, apply first for a building permit or change of use at the Lokalbaukommission (LBK) of the Planungsreferat. The final licence comes only after its written release, and no preliminary licence is possible on this route.5

  3. Prove your training

Attend the IHK course on food law and file the proof, unless your vocational qualification’s final exam covered food law.5

  4. Assemble the papers

ID card or passport, a copy of the lease, site and floor plans at 1:100, the IHK proof and, for companies, a commercial or association register extract. Non-EU nationals must also meet residence-law rules.5

  5. Apply to the KVR

    €100 to €6,000

Apply in text form on the KVR’s form. The fee is €100 to €6,000, depending on the size of the rooms and their location in the city. A licence can be refused after previous convictions or other serious findings.51

Gaststättenerlaubnis (hospitality licence)

Issued by the City of Munich’s Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR)

GaststättenerlaubnisBy room size and location in the city
€100 to €6,000
Terrace on public ground, first decisionPlus €16 to €77 per m² a year, by street group
€180
  • The licence names the operating type, for example a Diskothek, and covers only the rooms named. A stand-in manager needs a Stellvertretungserlaubnis.
  • Taking over a venue unchanged: a preliminary licence, then the final licence after three months.
  • For a one-off event serving alcohol, a temporary permit (Gestattung) is needed; a two-week deadline applies once the papers are in.
  • Ask the KVR how long a new licence takes.

Prices, VAT and the bill in Munich.

Schlagergarten in the Werksviertel prints its table minimums and P1 and Pacha do not, so the bill below works from a round figure, with a service charge and VAT on drinks.

A table on a SaturdayWorked example, not a quote
A table on a Saturday: how the bill adds up
Minimum spend€1,000.00
Service charge 10%, added by the venue€100.00
VAT on drinks 19%, included in the prices€175.63
Guest pays€1,100.00
Tip the guest chooses to addNo tax
  • Drinks at the table, bottles, mixers and cocktails, carry the 19% standard rate.15

  • Food served for eating on the spot carries the 7% reduced rate, drinks excluded, so a table with food on the bill splits between 19% and 7%.15

  • Admission to concerts and comparable performances is 7%. Ask a tax adviser or the Finanzamt whether a DJ night’s entry counts; the guide assumes 19%.15

  • Bavaria bars municipalities from levying an entertainment tax or a drinks tax, so Munich adds nothing on top of VAT.4

  • Ask a tax adviser how VAT treats a mandatory service charge; the example taxes it at the drinks rate.15

Club ticket prices and table minimums in Munich

Rough estimates for tickets and bottle-service tables, from public listings and venues’ own pages.

Club night tickets

€8 to €15

Typically about €10

From four clubs’ own pages for regular nights: €8 at Pimpernel after midnight and on Bahnwärter Thiel’s Thursdays, €10 at Neuraum, and €15 at the door for Bahnwärter Thiel’s Friday and Saturday nights. Milchbar’s Monday night is €5. Headliner and birthday nights cost more.

Table minimumsGeneral estimate

€200 to €700

A typical table, about €200

This rests on two rooms that print a minimum spend on their own pages: Schlagergarten asks €200 for a standing table and €700 for a VIP lounge table, and Paradiso Tanzbar €50 a person, or €200 for four. P1, Pacha and Neuraum publish no amount. Treat it as a guide, before any service charge.

Figures are estimates from the sources and samples listed. They change often and may be wrong. Check with the venue or the relevant authority before relying on them. Venues and events named here aren’t affiliated with VenueStack and haven’t endorsed this guide. Price sources: Pimpernel, Bahnwärter Thiel, Neuraum, Milchbar, Schlagergarten, Paradiso Tanzbar.

Bar staff wages, minimum wage and tips in Munich.

Pay in Munich starts from the federal minimum wage. Beyond that, how tips and any service charge are handled decides what reaches your staff.

Minimum wageStatutory minimum, gross per hour. Ask the Bundesagentur für Arbeit or local recruiters for going rates by role in Munich

Minimum wage €13.90 an hour, since 1 January 202618

  • The statutory minimum wage is €13.90 an hour gross from 1 January 2026, and €14.60 from 1 January 2027.18

  • A minijob can pay up to €603 a month in 2026.16

  • Tips that guests give voluntarily on top of the price, with no legal claim to them, are tax-free for the employee.17

  • A compulsory service charge is not voluntary, so it may not fit that wording. Ask a tax adviser before passing one on as tips.17
