Nightlife in Porto.

Porto’s night gathers in the Baixa. The Movida, as the city calls it, runs late around Rua da Galeria de Paris, Cândido dos Reis and Conde de Vizela, and up to the squares of Parada Leitão and Filipa de Lencastre by the Piolho café. A few streets east, Maus Hábitos stays open until 06:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. It is a student city too: Queima das Fitas takes over a week in May and the freshers’ week returns every October. In June comes São João, which the City calls the longest night of the year. For the rest of the year, though, your closing hour depends on which of the city’s zones your door opens onto.

Porto bar rules: closing time, licences and noise.

Porto draws its night rules on a map. The Movida regulation splits the centre into three zones, and the zone your entrance sits in decides when the music stops. Opening notices and hours go through Porto City Council (Câmara Municipal do Porto).

The night, by the clock6 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Bars, cafés and restaurants1
    • 6 p.m. to Midnight To midnight, every night
    • Midnight to 2 a.m. Extension, up to 2 hours
  • Dance venues under 100 m²1
    • 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. To 2:00, every night
    • 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. Extension, up to 2 hours
  • Dance venues over 100 m²1
    • 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. To 4:00, every night
    • 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. Extension, up to 2 hours
  • Terraces1
    • 6 p.m. to Midnight Sun to Thu, to midnight
    • Midnight to 2 a.m. Fri, Sat, holiday eves
  • Drinks for the street, citywide1
    • 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Allowed
    • 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. No drinks for the street

These are the Núcleo da Movida’s hours, the same every night of the week; dashed is the Mayor’s extension. In the Zona Protegida, bars, restaurants and dance venues all close at midnight, terraces at 01:00 on weekend nights, and extensions are only for Thursday to Saturday nights and holiday eves. In the Zona de Contenção their hours are not limited, and outside the Zona da Movida hours are free. None of these limits applies on the night of São João (23 to 24 June) or on New Year’s Eve.

Zones, hours and the street

  • Three zones

    Núcleo, Protegida, Contenção

If any entrance is in the zone, the rules apply, and if one is in the Zona Protegida, its hours apply.

    Read the rule

Porto limits hours only inside the Zona da Movida, mapped in the regulation’s annexes, in three parts: the Núcleo da Movida, where most night venues are; the Zona Protegida, where many residents live and the hours are stricter; and the Zona de Contenção, a ring around both.

The council can also set shorter hours anywhere for safety or residents’ quality of life. Check the council’s map for your address.1

  • Closing hours by zone

    Midnight, 2:00 and 4:00

Public area leaves out the cloakroom, the lobby, toilets, terraces and yards.

    Read the rule

In the Núcleo, bars, cafés and restaurants close at midnight, dance venues with less than 100 m² of public area at 02:00, and larger ones at 04:00, every night of the week. In the Zona Protegida all three close at midnight. In the Zona de Contenção their hours are not limited.

At closing time entry, service and all sound and images stop, and you have at most 30 minutes to get guests out quietly.1

  • Drinks for the street

    21:00 to 08:00

It covers every drink, not only alcohol.

    Read the rule

Across the whole municipality, no establishment may sell, hand out or make available drinks on the street, or to drink there later, from 21:00 to 08:00. Bars, restaurants and dance venues may not let guests leave with glasses or bottles in those hours.

After 21:00 drinks go outside only on a terrace that is authorised, set up and open. Selling drinks for the street is fined €2,000 to €7,500 for an individual and €8,000 to €30,000 for a company.1

  • Terraces

    Midnight or 2:00

Awnings come in and furniture goes inside within 30 minutes of the venue closing.

    Read the rule

In the Zona da Movida a terrace runs only while its venue is open: to midnight Sunday to Thursday, and to 02:00 on Friday and Saturday nights and holiday eves. In the Zona Protegida those weekend nights end at 01:00.

Terraces in the Núcleo more than 150 metres from the Zona Protegida can ask the Gabinete da Movida for other hours.1

  • São João and New Year’s Eve

    2 nights

These are the two nights the whole centre runs without zone limits.

    Read the rule

The rules on hours, live music, noise, drinks for the street, lighting and terraces do not apply on the nights of 23 to 24 June and 31 December to 1 January.

Plan staff and stock for both well ahead.1

Opening and later hours

  • Opening notice

    Before opening

A room asking for a requirement to be waived takes the authorisation route instead: 25% of the fee on filing and a decision in 30 days.

    Read the rule

Before a restaurant, café or bar opens, the operator files a Mera Comunicação Prévia (prior notice) online on gov.pt, choosing Porto as the municipality. The receipt arrives by email at once, and if a fee applies the council sends the amount within 5 working days.

Ask the council for the fees.2

  • Dance floor or live music

    Venue licence

Ask the council for the fee and the timing before you sign a lease.

    Read the rule

Discotecas, bars with live music, dance halls and party halls also need a council licence to use the premises as a public entertainment venue. The steps are an online request, a document check, an inspection, then the fee.3

  • Later hours

    Up to 2 hours

Register the venue with the Gabinete da Movida first.

    Read the rule

The Mayor may extend a venue’s hours by up to two hours on a reasoned request, if its public area is at least 20 m² and it adopts the council’s safety and quality-of-life measures. A venue can also ask for two extra hours on two dates a year of its choosing, at least 15 working days ahead.

The request needs a signed undertaking, a recent acoustic assessment at the hours sought and a plan by a qualified technician, and the council hears the PSP and the Polícia Municipal. An extension lasts a year, renews while the conditions hold, and lapses with a change of holder.1

Sound, the door and the guest

  • Sound limiter after midnight

    Sealed

Ask for calibration and sealing through Linha Porto at least 10 working days ahead.

    Read the rule

After midnight, venues in the Núcleo or the Zona Protegida with live music, a sound system or a mixing desk need a sound limiter that logs, calibrated and sealed by the council, which sends its logs to the council automatically.

Going well over the set level, or tampering with it, counts as a danger to public health. Fines for no limiter or no lobby run €1,500 to €5,000 for an individual and €4,000 to €37,500 for a company.1

  • Entrance lobby

    1.20 m

From 20:00, while music plays, doors and windows stay shut and the two lobby doors open in turn.

    Read the rule

After midnight the same venues need an entrance lobby so the noise inside is not heard outside. The guideline is double doors on return springs, opening outward, with at least 1.20 m between them; curtains do not count.

No speakers may be set up on the street or a facade, no sound may be projected outside after 20:00, and no strobes, lasers or club lighting may shine onto the street.1

  • Under 18s

    18

Staff may ask for ID and should whenever in doubt.

    Read the rule

Alcohol may not be sold, given or made available to anyone under 18 in a public place or a place open to the public, and minors may not drink there.

A printed notice of the ban must be on display. A breach is a very serious economic offence, investigated and fined by ASAE.4

Prices, VAT and the bill in Porto.

With the bigger rooms in the Núcleo closing at 04:00, the night’s takings come down to what each table orders. Bottles carry the full IVA rate, and any food on the same bill carries less.

A table on a SaturdayWorked example, not a quote
A table on a Saturday: how the bill adds up
Minimum spend€1,000.00
Service charge 10%, added by the venue€100.00
IVA on drinks 23%, included in the prices€205.69
Guest pays€1,100.00
Tip the guest chooses to addNo tax
  • On the mainland, IVA is 23% at the standard rate, 13% at the intermediate rate and 6% at the reduced rate. The example counts IVA inside the table price.6

  • Food and drink served are on the 13% list, but alcoholic drinks and soft drinks are excluded from it, so a bottle table carries the standard 23%. A table with food on the bill splits between the two.7

  • Entry to music, dance and theatre shows is on the 6% list. Ask the Autoridade Tributária whether a club night’s entry counts, and how a mandatory service charge is taxed; the example taxes the charge at the drinks rate.7

Club ticket prices and table minimums in Porto

Rough estimates for tickets and bottle-service tables, from public listings and venues’ own pages.

Club night ticketsGeneral estimate

€10 to €25

Typically about €15

No Porto club publishes a door price on its own page, so this is a general estimate for a Thursday to Saturday club night, generalised from the Lisbon guide’s estimate and the door prices clubs publish in Vienna and Berlin. Headliner and festival nights cost more.

Table minimumsGeneral estimate

€120 to €280

A typical table, about €200

Only one Porto club publishes table prices on its own page: Lust Porto, in Galerias de Paris, whose VIP tables run from one bottle for up to four people to three bottles for up to twelve, priced for the whole group, not per person. One room is not the whole market, so read this as a general guide.
