Nightlife in Lisbon.

Bairro Alto is where the whole of Lisbon meets, with music for every taste, and Pink Street in Cais do Sodré is where the night carries on, Pensão Amor’s bar open to 4:00 from Thursday to Saturday. Beyond them the clubs spread across the city: Lux Frágil at Santa Apolónia, Village Underground in Alcântara, and K Urban Beach on the Santos riverside, which dances every night until 06:00. June belongs to the Festas de Lisboa and the neighbourhood arraiais. It is a city that goes out late and stays out. On the same street, though, a bar and a club can keep very different hours.

Lisbon bar rules: closing time, licences and noise.

Lisbon sorts its rooms into groups, and the group your room falls into sets your closing hour. The street keeps its own clock, with drinks for outside stopping at 23:00 on weeknights. Opening notices and hours go through Lisbon City Council (Câmara Municipal de Lisboa).

These are Zona A maximums. Zona B, a riverside zone mapped in the regulation, has free hours. Terraces keep their venue’s hours unless the City restricts them. The limit on selling drinks for outside covers the whole city; serving inside, seated terraces, home delivery and the Festas de Lisboa are exempt.

Hours and the street

  • Closing hours by group

    2:00, 3:00 and 4:00

Lisbon’s 2016 hours regulation sets Zona A hours by group. Bars and pubs open 12:00 to 02:00 Sunday to Thursday and to 03:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday eves. Licensed dance venues, such as discotecas and nightclubs, open 12:00 to 04:00 every day.

    More

Restaurants, cafés, cervejarias and snack bars run 06:00 to 02:00. Fado houses, performance halls and casinos sit in the 04:00 group too.

  • Free hours in Zona B

    Free

The regulation splits the city into Zona A and Zona B, mapped in its annex. In Zona B, a riverside zone, venues and their terraces have free hours.

    More

Check the annex map for your address before you count on it.

  • Drinks for outside

    23:00 or midnight

Since 15 February 2026 no establishment in Lisbon, shops and convenience stores included, may sell alcohol for drinking outside from 23:00 to 08:00 Sunday to Thursday, or from midnight to 08:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday eves.

    More

Serving inside, on seated terraces and for home delivery is exempt, and so is the period of the Festas de Lisboa. Fines run €150 to €3,000 and fall on the seller; the Polícia Municipal enforces it with the PSP.

  • Terraces

    Venue hours

A terrace follows its venue’s hours unless the City restricts them.

    More

A seated terrace can keep serving after 23:00. Handing drinks to guests standing in the street cannot.

  • Revised hours

    Consulted

The City has consulted on a revision of the 2016 hours regulation, and calls the citywide limit on drinks for outside a preventive measure that applies until the revision is made.

    More

The hours on this page come from the 2016 text, which is still the one in force. Check with the City before you plan a season around them.

Opening and where

  • Opening notice

    Before opening

Before a restaurant, café or bar opens, the operator submits a Mera Comunicação Prévia (prior notice) to the council, online, declaring that every condition for trading is met.

    More

The guide has not confirmed the fees, or the extra steps for a room with a dance floor. Ask the City before you sign a lease.

  • Bairro Alto and Bica

    No new bars

The council notes that under the Bairro Alto and Bica urbanisation plan, no new drinks venue or non-artistic entertainment venue, and no change of use to one, is authorised in the plan area.

    More

Restaurants without a dance space, cafés and fado houses may be allowed. For a bar, the practical route is a premises that is already licensed.

The room and the door

  • Late bars without a dance floor

    4:00

A bar without a dance space can join the 04:00 group if it has an entrance lobby, a private security officer at the door and CCTV. At 200 capacity or more it also needs weapons detection and a door security service.

    More

Dance venues must be duly licensed for dancing to sit in that group.

  • Music after 23:00

    Limiter

A venue open after 23:00 with live or amplified music needs soundproofing, a sound limiter that logs, an acoustic assessment, and doors and windows kept shut.

    More

Budget for the limiter and the assessment before the fit-out.

    Source: Hours regulation
  • Under 18s

    18

Alcohol may not be sold, given or made available to anyone under 18 in a public place or a place open to the public, and minors may not drink there.

    More

Staff may ask for ID and should whenever in doubt. A printed notice of the ban must be on display. A breach is a very serious economic offence, investigated and fined by ASAE.

Prices, VAT and the bill in Lisbon.

Inside, the bill splits two ways. Food at a Lisbon table is taxed at one rate and the bottles beside it at another, so the mix on a minimum spend decides what you keep.

A table on a SaturdayWorked example, not a quote
A table on a Saturday: how the bill adds up
Minimum spend€1,000.00
Service charge 10%, added by the venue€100.00
IVA on drinks 23%, included in the prices€205.69
Guest pays€1,100.00
Tip the guest chooses to addNo tax
  • On the mainland, IVA is 23% at the standard rate, 13% at the intermediate rate and 6% at the reduced rate. Prices are quoted with IVA included, so the bill shows it inside the total.

    Source: IVA rates
  • Food and drink served are on the 13% list, but alcoholic drinks and soft drinks are excluded from it, so a bottle table carries the standard 23%. A table with food on the bill splits between the two.

    Source: IVA List II
  • The guide has not confirmed how IVA treats entry or a mandatory service charge. The example taxes the charge at the drinks rate; ask the Autoridade Tributária before you price either.
