Nightlife in Vienna.

Vienna’s night is spread across the city rather than packed into one strip. Bars and music clubs fill the old railway arches along the Gürtel, electronic clubs sit by the canal at Spittelauer Lände, and Prater Dome, which the tourist board calls Austria’s largest disco, stands by the Giant Ferris Wheel. In the Old Town, the Bermuda Triangle has been a bar quarter since the early 1980s, and the Volksgarten club sits on the Ring. Winter is ball season, with January and February the busiest months, and in summer guests move outdoors to the beach bars on the Danube Canal. How late you trade comes down to the type of venue your licence names.

Vienna bar rules: closing time, licences and noise.

In Vienna the closing hour follows the type of venue your trade licence names, so a club and a bar on the same street can close two hours apart. Trade registrations and operating permits go to the Magistratische Bezirksämter (district offices).

The night, by the clock6 p.m. to 7 a.m.

  • Schanigärten (outdoor seating)9
    • 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Secured by 23:00

The lane a venue sits on follows the operating type named on its trade licence. The closing hour is a hard close: guests may not enter or stay, and must have left by then. Where one premises runs types with different hours, the stricter hours apply to the whole venue unless each type has its own entrance and guest rooms. On New Year’s Eve no closing hour applies, except to spirits bars (Branntweinschenken). The city can allow a later closing hour for one venue. Some summers the city lets gardens in certain areas stay open to midnight; check with the City of Vienna which streets and months.

Hours and the neighbours

  • Closing hour by type

    06:00

Your type is the one named on your trade licence.

    Read the rule

Vienna’s ordinance sets the latest closing hour by operating type: discos and clubbing lounges 06:00, bars 04:00, restaurants, cafés and ice cream parlours 02:00, wine taverns and snack bars midnight. Bars, discos and clubbing lounges may open from 10:00.

WKO describes a disco as mainly for dancing with a large drinks offer, a clubbing lounge as music louder than background, usually with no dance floor, and a bar by its counter, high stools and dimmed light.4

  • A hard close

    Everyone out

The closing hour is when the room is empty, not last orders.

    Read the rule

During the closing hours guests may neither enter nor stay. You must warn them in good time, and they must have left by the closing hour. The hours apply to the whole venue and all its rooms, but not to its outdoor garden.

Plan the last call and the cloakroom around it.1

  • Later closing for one venue

    No stamp duty

It must be refused where neighbours have repeatedly been unreasonably disturbed by guests outside, or where you have repeatedly been fined for breaking the hours.

    Read the rule

The city can allow a single venue an earlier opening or a later closing hour. Apply in person, in writing or online; no special documents or deadlines apply, and there is no federal stamp duty or federal administrative charge.

An appeal goes to the administrative court.5

  • Music and the neighbours

    Measured in the flat

The limit is set at your neighbour’s, not at your speakers.

    Read the rule

Noise from a venue falls under the trade code: people living above or beside it may not be disturbed beyond a reasonable level. Where needed, the city’s MA 36 measures the level in the neighbouring flat, and the music inside must come down until it is acceptable there.

Plan insulation and the sound system around the nearest flat.6

  • Noise outside the door

    Public order

The court said noise typical of the business belongs in the operating permit’s conditions, such as keeping windows and doors shut from a set time of day.

    Read the rule

Making disturbing noise in an improper way is an offence under Vienna’s public-order law. A Vienna court held that guests’ normal conversation, even with the windows open, is not such noise; loud shouting or chanting can be.7

  • Schanigarten (outdoor seating)

    Up to 7 years

Build only once the permit is final, and apply to renew at the end of the season before.

    Read the rule

Seating on public ground needs a permit from the district office under the Gebrauchsabgabegesetz. The first permit runs for at most a year and renewals for up to seven; since 1 September 2023 a garden can be approved for the whole year.

A new operator must report a takeover within 12 weeks.8

  • What a garden costs

    From €2.60/m²

The zone follows the garden’s location, so ask the district office which one applies before you plan the size.

    Read the rule

The use fee (Gebrauchsabgabe) is charged per started square metre and per started month, by zone: €24.50 in zone 1, €12.40 in zone 2 and €2.60 in zone 3. The application carries €21 in federal fees, or €13 online with ID Austria.12

  • Vienna Club Commission

    Free

Bring it in early when a neighbour complains or a permit stalls.

    Read the rule

The Vienna Club Commission is a free service point for club and event matters, working on behalf of the city. It advises operators and mediates neighbour complaints, urban-development and permit issues.

Closing hours and taxes are among its topics.10

Licence and permits

  • Hospitality trade licence

    Proof of competence

The proof applies to the holder or the manager, not to each server.

    Read the rule

Serving food and pouring drinks needs a hospitality trade licence (Gastgewerbe). It is a regulated trade: the licence holder, or a trade-law manager, needs a proof of competence (Befähigungsnachweis) from training, or from listed school qualifications with a 12-week placement. Since 15 March 2024 a university degree alone no longer qualifies.

If you meet every condition when you register, you can start at once.11

  • Operating permit

    Before opening

Taking over an approved venue in the same operating type needs no new permit.

    Read the rule

The premises need an operating permit (Betriebsanlagengenehmigung). It need not exist when you register the trade, but you may not open without it.

Changes to the premises must be notified or approved.11

  • No entertainment tax

    None

A club night pays VAT on its entry, not a city entertainment tax.

    Read the rule

Vienna’s entertainment tax (Vergnügungssteuer) was abolished from 1 January 2017 for everything except unlicensed gaming machines.14

The door and the bar

  • Drinking age

    16 and 18

Without an adult, under-14s may stay in a venue from 05:00 to 23:00 and under-16s from 05:00 to 01:00.

    Read the rule

Under-16s may not drink, buy or carry alcohol in public. Under-18s may not drink, buy or carry drinks containing distilled spirits in public. Under-18s may not enter spirits bars (Branntweinschenken).

When in doubt, age is proven with photo ID.15

  • Soft drinks and drunk guests

    2 soft drinks

Staff must ask for official photo ID or a youth card to check a young guest’s age, and a notice of the age limits must be on display.

    Read the rule

A venue serving alcohol must offer at least two cold soft drinks no dearer than the cheapest cold alcoholic drink, compared by the litre. No more alcohol may go to anyone disturbing the peace through drunkenness.1

  • Security staff

    Regulated trade

    These rules bind security firms.

    Read the rule

Event stewarding and door control by a security firm is a regulated trade that needs a proof of competence. The law sets no particular training for the staff, but firms may use only reliable and suitable people and must send the security authority a list of all staff, whose reliability it checks.

Ask WKO or the district office whether your own employed door staff need anything more.16

How to get a liquor licence in Vienna

A bar or club registers the hospitality trade with the district office for its operating type, and needs an operating permit for its premises before it opens.

  1. Choose the operating type

The registration names the operating type (Betriebsart), and the type sets your closing hour: bar, disco and clubbing lounge are separate types. Changing type later must be notified.14

  2. Prove your competence

The licence holder, or a trade-law manager, needs a proof of competence from training, or from listed school qualifications with a 12-week placement. A university degree alone no longer qualifies.11

  3. Register the trade

    Free

Register at the district office (Magistratisches Bezirksamt). If you meet every condition, you can start at once, though the venue still needs its operating permit before it opens. A criminal record certificate, from the country they lived in before, is needed only from someone who has lived in Austria for less than five years.1112

  4. File for the operating permit

Apply to the district office’s operating permits centre. The filing covers the operating type, the rooms and seat numbers, opening hours, staff numbers, ventilation and the volume of any music. WKO’s guide describes a simplified procedure for smaller venues with background music only; ask which applies to a club.13

  5. Budget for site visits

    From €7.63

The permit procedure itself costs nothing, but officials’ work outside the office is charged per started half hour per official: €7.63 on weekdays from 07:30 to 15:30, €11.62 at other daytime hours and on Saturdays, and €17.07 at night, on Sundays and holidays.12

Prices, VAT and the bill in Vienna.

Volksgarten puts its table minimums on its own site, so the bill below starts from its indoor figure, with VAT and a service charge inside it.

A table on a SaturdayWorked example, not a quote
A table on a Saturday: how the bill adds up
Minimum spend€1,000.00
Service charge 10%, added by the venue€100.00
VAT on drinks 20%, included in the prices€183.33
Guest pays€1,100.00
Tip the guest chooses to addNo tax
  • Drinks served in a venue, coffee and tea included, carry the 20% standard rate; food, tap water and milk carry 10%. The 4.9% rate is never used for drinks or food served in a venue.17

  • Theatre and music performances carry 13%. Ask a tax adviser whether a DJ club night’s entry counts; the guide assumes 20%.17

  • A compulsory service charge is not a tip: it counts as pay, subject to social security and income tax. Ask a tax adviser how VAT treats it; the example taxes it at the drinks rate.18

Bar staff wages, minimum wage and tips in Vienna.

In Austria the pay floor for each role comes from the hospitality collective agreement, and a late close adds night supplements and sometimes the fare home.

Minimum wageNot a statutory minimum wage: this is the lowest monthly rate in the hospitality collective agreement for Vienna gastronomy (wage group 5, helpers in their first five years), gross

Minimum wage €2,097 a month, since 1 October 202619

  • From 1 October 2026 the collective agreement’s monthly minimums for Vienna gastronomy run from €2,096.50 for helpers to €2,232 for qualified staff such as cooks, €2,328 for bar heads and deputy managers, and €2,571 for restaurant managers and head chefs, rising with years of service.19

  • Night work earns a supplement of €9.50 for each of three blocks between midnight and 06:00, €28.50 in all.19

  • Where a venue closes after midnight and public transport has stopped, a Vienna agreement makes the employer pay the cheapest trip home or provide transport. It is written for restaurants, so check whether it covers your type.20

  • Tips that guests give voluntarily on top of the bill are free of income tax for the employee, card tips passed on and a tronc shared on a fixed key included.18

  • Since 1 January 2026 social security on tips uses one flat monthly base: €65 for staff handling cash (€85 in 2027, €100 in 2028) and €45 for those who do not. Staff may opt out if their real tips are under half the flat rate.18

  • A venue running a tronc must tell the staff in it how tips are shared, and staff can ask for a written account of card tips.18

It depends on the operating type on the trade licence. Discos and clubbing lounges close by 06:00, bars by 04:00, and restaurants, cafés and hotels by 02:00. The closing hour is a hard close: guests must have left by then. On New Year’s Eve no closing hour applies, except in spirits bars.

The city can allow a single venue a later closing hour. Apply in person, in writing or online, with no special documents and no federal stamp duty. It must be refused where neighbours have repeatedly been disturbed by guests outside, or where you have repeatedly been fined for breaking the hours.

Register the hospitality trade at the district office for your operating type, with a proof of competence held by you or a trade-law manager. The premises also need an operating permit before you open, unless you take over an approved venue of the same type.

Trade registration and a new or changed operating permit are free. Officials’ work outside the office is charged per started half hour per official, from €7.63 on weekdays from 07:30 to 15:30 to €17.07 at night, on Sundays and holidays.

16 for alcohol in general, and 18 for drinks containing distilled spirits. Staff must ask for official photo ID or a youth card to check a young guest’s age.

20% on drinks served in a venue, coffee and tea included, and 10% on food and tap water. Theatre and music performances carry 13%; ask a tax adviser whether a DJ club night’s entry counts. The guide assumes 20%.

Neighbours may not be disturbed beyond a reasonable level. The city’s MA 36 can measure the level in the neighbouring flat, and the music must come down until it is acceptable there. Noise typical of the business is handled through the operating permit’s conditions, such as keeping windows and doors shut from a set time.

A garden on public ground needs a permit from the district office and pays a use fee per started square metre and month: €24.50 in zone 1, €12.40 in zone 2 and €2.60 in zone 3. The application carries €21 in federal fees, or €13 online. A garden can be approved for the whole year, and WKO says it must be secured by 23:00 at the latest.

Event stewarding and door control by a security firm is a regulated trade needing a proof of competence. The firm may use only reliable, suitable staff and must send the security authority a list of them. Ask WKO or the district office whether your own employed door staff need anything more.

Tips guests give voluntarily on top of the bill are free of income tax for the employee. For social security, a flat monthly base applies since 1 January 2026: €65 for staff handling cash and €45 for those who do not. A compulsory service charge is not a tip and counts as pay.

From 1 October 2026 the monthly minimums for Vienna gastronomy run from €2,096.50 for helpers to €2,571 for restaurant managers and head chefs, rising with years of service, and night work earns a supplement of €9.50 for each of three blocks between midnight and 06:00.

Regular nights cost about €10 to €20 at the door, from U4, The Loft and Volksgarten’s own pages. Volksgarten publishes its table minimums, from €1,000 indoors and up to €1,500 outdoors in summer, entry included for 10 to 12 guests.
